Obituary
Sherwin Lee Siy, 40, a communications lawyer with expertise in intellectual property and privacy issues who resided in Washington, D.C., passed away of natural causes in North Carolina on July 7, 2021.
Siy was born at Houston’s Methodist Hospital on July 29, 1980, and spent his youth in Beaumont, Texas. He attended Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School. He graduated from Stanford University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and received his JD from UC Berkeley School of Law in 2005 with a Certificate of Specialization in Law and Technology.
After receiving his JD from Berkeley, Siy was a fixture in the Washington, D.C., legal community regarding issues including copyright, intellectual property, and Internet privacy rights. He was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar and California State Bar (inactive); Supreme Court; Second Circuit; and Federal Circuit.
He spent a year as Staff Counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a nonprofit research organization in D.C. focused on privacy and civil liberties. He later served as Vice President of Legal Affairs and Deputy Legal Director at Public Knowledge, a public-interest advocacy firm focused on telecommunications, copyright and intellectual property policy and law. He has been an adjunct instructor in the School of Communication for American University and a professorial lecturer in law at the George Washington University Law School.
Siy also worked as Special Counsel at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for nearly three years, before joining the Wikimedia Foundation as Lead Public Policy Manager in 2018, where he continued to work at the time of his passing.
He was a voracious reader, a master of trivia night and enjoyed running 5Ks.
A typical reaction came from Electronic Frontier Foundation Senior Legislative Counsel Ernesto Falcon: "I am a lawyer today because of how much my friend's legal mind inspired me."
Siy is survived by his mother, Lourdes Lee Kong, B.S.N. and R.N.; father Frankie Siy, M.D.; stepfather Joseph Kong, M.D.; sibling Angelique Geehan; Angelique's children Nora and Tera; and a circle of family and friends who feel his loss keenly.
A memorial service will be held starting at noon ET on July 31, 2021, at the Intercontinental Hotel Washington, D.C., The Wharf. Please find further details, including possible donation information, at https://sherwinmemorial.rsvpify.com , or reach out with questions to FriendsofSherwin@gmail.com.
